Born in Glasgow and now living in Ayrshire, James studied at Glasgow School of Art under John Boyd and William Crosbie. He exhibits regularly at the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolours, Paisley Art Institute and the Royal Glasgow Institute where he was awarded the Royal College of Physicians Award in 1997. His work is held in the collections of HRH Duke of Edinburgh, Lord and Lady MacFarlane and Touche Ross.
